University spearheads cites role of academe on preventing terrorism


COTABATO CITY, Philippines, May 27— The first Mindanao Peace and Security Summit recently culminates with a jumpacked crowd at the Cotabato City State Polytechnic College (CCSPC) gym. National Defense Secretary Delfin N. Lorenzana graced the event dubbed “Grasping the Role of the Academe on the War Against Illegal Drugs, Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism in the Pursuit of Peace and Development in Southern Philippines”

The Joint Task Force Central and the Cotabato City State Polytechnic College recognized the imperative to engage all stakeholders by giving priority to the youth sector being the most prone and vulnerable to radicalization.

In his opening remarks, CCSPC President Dr. Damman S. Bantala said “this is now the gesture of support coming from the academe. To support the program of the President Rodrigo Roa Duterte , to combat terrorism and to combat Illegal drugs. “

The initiative of Cotabato City State Polytechnic College in organizing the Peace and Security Summit 2018 is a welcome development because it demonstrates the eagerness of the academe to perform their role.

Cotabato City Mayor Atty. Frances Cynthia Guiani –Sayadi stressed on the role of the academe and the youth in countering violent extremism ,illegal drugs and corruption. The mayor said,” others say that Cotabato would be the next Marawi and I said No, because we the leaders and the people will not allow it to happen.”

In recent years, the role of education in preventing and countering violent extremism has gained prominence among policymakers and practitioners.

With this development, the 6th Infantry (Kampilan) Division thru the 6th Civil-Military Operations (Kasangga) Battalion framed the PEACE AND SECURITY FORUM 2018 as a preliminary activity to the summit.

The newly conferred Commander of the Western Mindanao Command Lt.Gen. Arnel B. Dela Vega said “Today marks another milestone in the history of Mindanao in particular as we have learned our lessons in what transpired exactly a year ago, in Marawi, as the terrorist groups siege the city and caused destructions. It proved that violent extremism have caused too much suffering to the people.

“It is a formidable challenge not only for the law enforcement and other government agencies but also for the wider spectrum of the society including the citizenry itself who are most often victims, casualties and collateral damage of criminals, terrorists, insurgents and violent extremist groups.” The New WestMinCom Commander expressed.

DND Sec. Lorenzana conveyed the president’s message by saying, “the  President fully supports  this undertaking specially because this summit has a very important objective and that is to explore the role of  education  in preventing violent extremism.

As a conclusion, the Peace and Security Forum 2018 is an effective tool to communicate the academe and students in order to understand the effects of terrorism among the community. (Andy Orobia)
