Suspected communist rebels burn five heavy equipment in Mindanao

KORONADAL CITY, Dec. 7 – Suspected communist rebels torched five heavy equipment as they stormed on Tuesday a construction firm in South Cotabato, police said.

Supt. Barney Condes, chief of police of Koronadal City, told reporters around 20 heavily armed New Peoples Army raided the Happy Living Realty and Development Corporation around 7:00 p.m. in the village of Conception and disarmed security men on duty.

Condes said the rebels immediately pour gasoline and set on fire three payloader and two dump trucks.

“They took the guards weapons, mobile phones and computer monitor,” he said.

The incident happened while the military pulled out their presence in nearby Tupi town as part of confidence building measures for the peace talks.

On November 13, the rebels also torched a unit of Yellow Bus Line in Tupi town.

The NPA, armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines, has been waging a guerrilla campaign in the countryside for four decades.

Military estimates placed the NPA strength at more than 5,000 men scattered in more than 60 guerrilla fronts throughout the country. (End)
