Four policemen wounded in Maguindanao roadside bomb attack

GENERAL SANTOS CITY, May 9 – Suspected Muslim rebels detonated a homemade bomb Tuesday morning in Mamasapano town in the southern Philippine province of Maguindanao leaving four policemen wounded.

Town mayor Zamzamin Ampatuan said cops were on board a patrol car heading to the provincial headquarters in nearby town of Shariff Aguak around 10:45 a.m. when a bomb went off on the side of the road as they were passing the public market of Mamasapano.

Ampatuan said wounded in the incident were identified as senior police officer 2 Mohammad Ampatuan, police officer 3 Ali Ibrahim Malok, police officer 3 Harim Guiampala Ampatuan and police officer 1 Norodin Enged Olympain.

“The police car was partly damaged. Our policemen were investigating the personalities behind the bombing,” he said.

Authorities were looking into possibility if the explosion has something to do with the death of a bodyguard of suspected drug lord, a woman and her two children during the anti-drug operation by combined forces of police and military on May 3.

The explosion also occurred as the military claimed to have killed a sub-leader of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters and 19 others in series of law enforcement operation in Maguindanao.

The BIFF is a breakaway of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front that has vowed to continue the uprising, claiming that the Malaysian-brokered talks would not lead to a separate Bangsamoro homeland in Mindanao. (End)
