New FIBA agreement sees The Sport Channel become Israel’s home of international basketball

MIES, Switzerland/TEL AVIV, Israel, April 7 — FIBA, the International Basketball Federation, on Thursday announced it has signed a renewal agreement with The Sports Channel in Israel for the 2017-2021 cycle of FIBA events.

The renewal of the agreement comes with FIBA’s Competition System 2017+ set to launch in November. Under the new system, teams across the globe will play regular official games in qualifying windows held year-round to qualify to the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 and FIBA Continental Cups 2021, including FIBA EuroBasket Cup 2021.

On the men’s side, the agreement covers FIBA EuroBasket 2017 – which will include Group B action taking place in Tel Aviv – the World Cup 2019 Qualifiers and Final Round as well as the FIBA EuroBasket Cup 2021 Qualifiers and Final Round. On the women’s side, The Sports Channel will broadcast games from the 2017, 2019 and 2021 editions of FIBA EuroBasket Women and the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup 2018. They will also broadcast the final stages of the FIBA Youth World Championships.

Tomer Tourgeman, CEO of The Sports Channel, said: “We are extremely happy to have renewed our agreement with FIBA. These are exciting times for Israeli basketball. We are hosting the Group Phase of the FIBA EuroBasket this summer for the first time in many years and then FIBA’s Competition System 2017+ is going to see the national team playing regular FIBA Basketball World Cup Qualifier games starting in November. The Sports Channel is truly going to be the Home of International Basketball and we can’t wait for it to start.”

Patrick Baumann, FIBA Secretary General and International Olympic Committee (IOC) Member, said: “FIBA is delighted to have renewed the agreement with The Sports Channel. Israel is a major basketball country and the extensive coverage of FIBA events over the next five years guarantees that the fans will get to see the very best of international basketball.”

The agreement was brokered by FIBA Media, the strategic partnership between FIBA and Perform, which continues to secure multi-year agreements related to FIBA’s new calendar of events. (FIBA)
